Step 5: Waste Reduction

Over the last 5 years, Altro has reduced its waste to landfill by 26% and no longer sends any PVC waste to landfill. Reducing waste is an area that has required a high level of technical expertise. As a manufacturer of PVC we are fully aware of our responsibilities with regards to waste gases and liquids from our production processes. We continually monitor and capture these through primary heat exchange and secondary processes which reduce filtration emissions of volatile organic compounds.

There a number of different, practical reasons why PVC is an essential component in Altro’s products. These reasons include environmental benefits such us lower lifecycle energy consumption that aren’t always immediately apparent. Altro has strict manufacturing practices that remove and recycle particulate and liquid residues back into our production processes. In a manufacturing operation such as ours, any risk to environmental and human health can be strictly controlled and Altro has demonstrated a clear commitment to doing this stringently and effectively.

As well as controlling waste from manufacturing we also monitor general waste that occurs from day to day business activities. All consumables used on Altro sites such as paper, cardboard, fluorescent lighting tubes, batteries, mobile phones and waste toner cartridges are recycled. Altro also has effective systems in place for the recycling of production waste along with post consumer and installation waste.
