Recofloor Newsletter No. 4
Welcome to the fourth issue of the Recofloor newsletter.
In this issue, we reveal the leading 5 companies in Recofloor’s Bronze, Silver and Gold award scheme which rewards participants for collecting waste vinyl flooring for recycling.
The scheme has recruited new distribution sites, including one in Northern Ireland and additional drop-off sites too.
We are appealing to people to make sure that the waste collected by the scheme is not contaminated with items such as metal and packaging etc. Take a look at the photo of items we have found in the collection bags so far!
Read about the case of the missing bulk bags and meet Recofloor team member, Matthew Charlton. Finally, remember if you have a photo that we could use in the newsletter, please email it to Matthew: recofloor@axionconsulting.co.uk
Recofloor Awards - Who’s Winning?
The Recofloor Award Scheme, launched in January, rewards companies for the amount of vinyl flooring material collected for recycling with a Gold, Silver or Bronze award. Since the launch, Recofloor has been monitoring the amount of material collected by each participating company, and has calculated the leading five.
The results for the first quarter are:
• Hull Flooring in first place with 29 points
• NKS Flooring in second place with 20 points
• Reform Flooring in third place with 16 points
• J & S Flooring in fourth place with 12 points
In equal fifth place with 10 points each:
• Mayfield Floors;
• Ross Hughes Flooring; and
• Horne Bros Carpets.
In each case, the number of points awarded are calculated according to the volumes of flooring collected and the number of fitters a company employs, to allow small, medium and large companies an equal chance of winning an award. Matthew Charlton confirms the number of fitters a company has with all new members of the scheme to enable them to be eligible for the awards. If you are a new member of the scheme, please expect a call from Matt to ensure your eligibility for the awards.
Vinyl Flooring Only Please!
Recofloor is appealing to everyone to do what they can to ensure that only vinyl flooring is collected in the Recofloor bags.
Unfortunately, some of the material collected by the scheme has been found to be contaminated with other forms of waste. Items found range from packaging to metal flooring edging strips and even Stanley knife blades!
Contamination can prevent material from being recycled properly and can prove hazardous for the workers involved in hand-sorting the waste prior to recycling. Please help by asking all your fitters to make sure they only include vinyl flooring and reminding them of Recofloor’s specification. For specification details please contact Recofloor or download the quality brochure from the Axion website: www.axionconsulting.co.uk

New Distribution & Drop-Off Sites
Recofloor has signed several new distributors to the scheme including Kings Lynn Flooring in Norfolk, PFL in Limerick and PFL in Belfast. New drop-off sites are: McGrath in Hackney, McGrath in Barking and BL Flooring Supplies in Bristol. Jamie Burt from BL Flooring Supplies commented: “BL Flooring Supplies are delighted to be supporting Recofloor. We are sure this scheme will be of immense benefit to the environment and our customers.”
Mystery Of The Missing Bulk Bags?
Three Recofloor bags containing a sizeable quantity of uplifted vinyl flooring have disappeared overnight from outside Recofloor drop-off site, Paul Rogers Flooring in Ewenny, Glamorgan. Bemused staff are at a loss to explain the disappearance as specialist lifting gear will have been needed to move the bags. With no collection booked, it seems unlikely that they could have been collected by mistake. With no other vinyl flooring recycling scheme, it would be difficult to get the material processed elsewhere. As Paul Rogers says: “It’s a bit of a mystery really, we’re based in a rural area, so we don’t know who on earth might have taken them or why! It’s providing some amusement in the office though!”
The Recofloor team would be very interested to hear from anyone who can shed any light on this matter and would welcome any suggestions as to what may have happened to the material. We don’t know who might have the material, but reports of a patchwork floor a few miles away have yet to be confirmed!
